The specific numbers matter less than the hierarchy. What you're building is a way to separate "casually interested" from "actively evaluating" without relying on someone manually reading tea leaves from form submissions.

Start rough and refine

Don't try to build a perfect scoring model on day one. Start with 5-6 high-signal actions, run it for 30 days, then look at which scores actually correlate with conversions. The first version is always wrong — the second version is where the value starts.

This is what segmentation adds. It gives you the context that scoring alone can't provide.

The combination is where qualification actually becomes useful. Scoring tells you how warm a lead is. Segmentation tells you what kind of lead they are. Together, they answer both questions at once.

In practice, that means your follow-up rules look like this:

High score + SaaS segment: Route to product-focused nurture with technical proof points. If score crosses 60, notify sales for direct outreach.

Medium score + Consultant segment: Send case studies and ROI-focused content. Keep in nurture until they hit a higher threshold or request a demo.

Low score + Any segment: Light-touch educational sequence. Don't push. Wait for engagement signals before escalating.

High score + Unknown segment: Ask a qualifying question via email ("What's your biggest challenge with X?") to sort them into the right path.

This is the system that turns a messy pile of contacts into a pipeline your team can actually work.

Day 1-2: Identify your top 5 engagement signals (the actions that your best customers took before converting). Assign point values.

Day 3-4: Create 3 segments: high-intent, nurture-stage, and cold/inactive. Set scoring thresholds for each.

Day 5: Build a workflow that routes high-intent leads to a stronger sequence and notifies your team. Keep everyone else in a standard nurture.

Week 2-4: Watch the data. Which scores actually convert? Which segments engage best? Adjust thresholds and add new signals based on what you see.
