SaaS Free Trial Nurture Sequence

A 7-email sequence to activate free trial users and convert them to paid subscribers. Ready to import into FlowNurture.

FlowNurture Team5 min read

This sequence is designed for SaaS companies with a free trial (7–14 days). It focuses on activation first — getting users to a value moment — before asking for a paid commitment.

When to use this template

Use this sequence when:

  • A user signs up for a free trial
  • They haven't connected a core feature or completed the primary setup step
  • Your product has a clear "aha moment" you can guide them toward

The sequence

Email 1 — Welcome + setup prompt

Timing: Immediately on trial signup

Subject options:

  • Your [Product] trial is live — here's where to start
  • [First name], you're in — let's get you set up

Body:

Hi [First name],

Your trial is live. Here's the one thing I'd suggest doing first: [core setup action].

It takes [time estimate] and unlocks [specific benefit].

[Button: Get started]

If you have any questions, just reply to this email — I read every one.

[Name]
[Title]

Goal: Get them to complete step one of setup.

Email 2 — Feature highlight

Timing: Day 2

Subject options:

  • The feature most [role] use first
  • One thing worth trying today

Body:

Hi [First name],

Most [job title / role] start with [feature] because [specific reason it's valuable].

Here's how it works: [1-2 sentence explanation]

[Link to docs or in-app action]

Let me know if you have questions.

[Name]

Goal: Surface your highest-value feature early.

Email 3 — Social proof

Timing: Day 4

Subject options:

  • How [Company] uses [Product] to [result]
  • What [Number] customers discovered in their first week

Body:

Hi [First name],

[Customer name/company] had a similar setup to yours when they started.

After [timeframe], they [specific result].

The thing that made the difference: [what they did].

If you're curious how this applies to your situation, [low-friction next step].

[Name]

Goal: Make the outcome real with a specific example.

Email 4 — Check-in (if not yet activated)

Timing: Day 5

Subject options:

  • Quick question for you
  • Still working through setup?

Body:

Hi [First name],

I noticed you haven't [setup action] yet — totally normal, trials get busy.

Is there anything I can help with? Some people run into [common friction point] — if that's the case, here's how to get past it: [link or explanation].

Or if [product] isn't the right fit, let me know and I'll point you somewhere that might work better.

[Name]

Goal: Remove blockers. Send this only to contacts who haven't completed setup. (Use FlowNurture's conditional branch to skip activated users.)

Email 5 — Value reinforcement

Timing: Day 7

Subject options:

  • What happens after the trial? (here's what to expect)
  • [First name], your trial is halfway through

Body:

Hi [First name],

Halfway through your trial. Here's a quick look at what you can unlock:

- [Feature 1]: [one-line benefit]
- [Feature 2]: [one-line benefit]
- [Feature 3]: [one-line benefit]

If you've been using [product] and finding it useful, this is a good time to [next step — upgrade link or schedule a call].

[Button: See plans]

Questions? Reply here.

[Name]

Goal: Re-engage with the full value picture before the trial ends.

Email 6 — Pre-expiry nudge

Timing: Day 10 (or 2 days before trial ends)

Subject options:

  • Your trial ends in 2 days
  • Before your trial expires

Body:

Hi [First name],

Your free trial wraps up on [date].

If you want to keep [core capability] running, here's what happens when you upgrade:

- [Benefit 1]
- [Benefit 2]
- No data loss — everything you've set up carries over

[Button: Upgrade now]

If you have questions about the right plan, reply here and I'll help.

[Name]

Goal: Create urgency without being pushy.

Email 7 — Post-expiry (if not converted)

Timing: Day 14 (1 day after trial ends)

Subject options:

  • Your trial has ended — a few options
  • Keep going? Here's how

Body:

Hi [First name],

Your trial has ended, but your data is still there — we hold it for [timeframe] before clearing it.

If you'd like to continue, [upgrade link].

If you're not ready, no pressure. If there's something that prevented you from moving forward — price, features, timing — I'd genuinely like to hear it. Just reply.

[Name]

Goal: Re-capture lapsed trials and gather feedback.

Implementation notes

Conditional branching

This sequence is most effective when you branch based on activation:

Trial signup trigger
  → Email 1 (all)
  → Wait 4 days
→ Check: Has user completed [setup action]?
     ├── Yes → Skip Email 4 (check-in), continue to Email 5
     └── No → Send Email 4 (check-in), continue to Email 5

In FlowNurture: add a Condition step after day 4's delay. Set it to check the contact property you use to track activation (a tag, a custom field, or a segment membership).

Personalization variables

Replace these placeholders before launching:

PlaceholderReplace with
[First name]{{contact.firstName}}
[core setup action]Your product's first value step
[time estimate]"5 minutes" / "10 minutes"
[specific benefit]The key outcome of that step
[job title / role]Your ICP's role
[feature]Your highest-retention feature
[upgrade link]Your pricing/upgrade page

A/B test recommendations

  • Email 1: Test subject line tone (functional vs. warm)
  • Email 4: Test sending at day 5 vs. day 3 for faster activation
  • Email 6: Test single CTA vs. two CTAs (upgrade + schedule call)
